The Fall, Friday, July 18 - Thursday, July 24

thefall

Check out The Fall’s gorgeous trailer here.

In hospital on the outskirts of 1920s Los Angeles, an injured stuntman begins to tell a fellow patient, a little girl with a broken arm a fantastical story about 5 mythical heroes. Thanks to his fractured state of mind and her vivid imagination, the line between fiction and reality starts to blur as the tale advances. Shot on location in 28 countries around the world, The Fall features a breakthrough performance by first-time Romanian child actress Catinca Untaru.

Running time 1 hour, 57 minutes, English, rated “R”

An achingly beautiful movie and a triumph of location scouting, with more cosmopolitan spectacle than the past three Indiana Jones and James Bond movies combined.
Peter Hartlaub, San Francisco Chronicle

The Fall’ is a feast for the eyes and the imagination, a deliciously vivid adventure fantasy.
Sean Axmaker, Seattle Post Intelligencer

Tarsem’s The Fall is a mad folly, an extravagant visual orgy, a free-fall from reality into uncharted realms. Surely it is one of the wildest indulgences a director has ever granted himself.
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times

Winged Migration, Special Family Movie! July 24 at 7PM

wingedmigrationIn this awe-inspiring, critically acclaimed documentary the camera literally flies alongside the birds as they wing their way north and south in their search for food. Using planes, gliders, helicopters and balloons, Academy Award-nominated Director Jacques Perrin, provides a spectacularly intimate look at his winged subjects. Special student rate: $5.00

Winged Migration’s imagery never ceases to amaze. Whether we’re seeing a startled flock taking sudden flight or zapping into a mountain lake to catch fish, our eye is constantly bedazzled.
Richard Snickle, Time

Who wants to see a documentary about birds of every feather who migrate across forty countries and seven continents? You do. With the help of many cinematographers, director Jacques Perrin gets so close to the intimate beauty of flight, you feel privileged. The result is a movie miracle; it soars.
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

The breathtaking documentary uses technology and human daring to attain a perspective on the lives of birds as lofty as it is exhilarating.
Keith Turan, LA Times

Beauty in Trouble, July 25 - July 31

beautyintrouble

This Czech comedy/drama explores a young woman’s dilemma when she finds herself in love with two very different men. Marcela, a beautiful Prague travel agent, is torn between her brutal and abusive husband (for whom she continues to feel a very strong sexual attraction) and an older good-hearted émigré (with a vineyard in Italy) who vows to take care of her and her children. Fans of the poet Robert Graves will recognize the title which was inspired by Graves’s verse of the same name (”Beauty in trouble flees to the good angel/On whom she can rely . . . “).

1 hour and 50 minutes, Unrated (contains strong sexuality, profanity and adult situations). In Czech with subtitles.

A vivid, nuanced and sweetly forgiving study in moral ambiguity.
Ann Hornaday, Washington Post

A movie of stark contrasts and zigzagging motives, “Beauty in Trouble” moves from the golden serenity of a Tuscan villa to the powdery chaos of a Czech garage without sacrificing thematic confidence or nuanced performances.

Jeannette Catsoulis, The New York Times (NY Times Critic Pick)

(Director) Hrebejk’s scenarios involve overlapping characters and incredible coincidences, but are grounded in believable family relationships….Beauty in Trouble, while not Hrebejk’s most complex film, is his most touching.
Mark Jenkins, NPR
