Interns

Our Internship Program offers talented college students a unique opportunity to work alongside skilled, professional museum staff. In some cases, non-college professional young men and women may apply also to become museum interns. The museum has the ability to offer free housing to a limited number of interns each session. Academic credit is also available in coordination with a student's academic advisor. The museum applies for many grants and funding to suppport department historical, educational projects and exhibits and on occasion may be able to offer an intern a stipend. In addition, the town of Plymouth has many job opportunities for part-time work, some in walking distance, driving or public transportation. Plymouth is a beautiful seacoast town rich in history and charm. The following are the four sessions available either full-time or part-time internships.

  • Winter - December, January, February (Starts 1st week of December)
  • Spring - March, April, May (Starts 1st week of March)
  • Summer - June, July, August (Starts 1st week of June)

Intern Testimonials

"I started at Plimoth Plantation in the summer of 2005 as an education intern, teachng education programs and writing recommendations for the improvement of field trip guides. I returned the next summer to revive their bicultural summer camp programs. I also spent a short time in development, writing and editing grants and programming proposals. In January 2007, I was back yet again for more grant writing, and I spent a year after graduation in development, interpretation and education.

More than a traditional museum internship, Plimoth Plantation internships are a window into a dynamic museum grappling with issues at the heart of histriography, cultural understanding and performance history. Every day brought something new. I was given the opportunity to try my hand at writing grant proposals and teaching education programs. Whether arranging rocks to build a raised bed garden, helping to mount an exhibition, greeting visitors or writing press releases, I always felt that interns were given the oppportunity to make valuable contributions to the museum. Perhaps the most memorable part of my internship, however, were the people I met -- passionate and talented employees, interns and volunteers dedicated to the telling of a multifaceted history from the multiple perspectives in which it was experienced. Each summer, the interns formed a community that has lasted long after the last intern left the musem. I am still in contact with fellow interns from 2005. Plymouth, Massachusetts is a lovely community to explore, and days spent on 'cultural adventures' and beach picnics remain some of the fondest memories of my college career.

Thank you, Plimoth Plantation, for the professional perspectives, but thank you also for the life experiences. Thank you for accepting me so fully into your institution. You have guided my career goals, profoundly affected my view of the role of museums and changed my understanding of the past."

"My summer at Plimoth Plantation was a unique and unforgettable experience. Although I grew up nearby and visited the museum on various field trips, I never fully realized all the amazing things that happen here. I worked as a Public Relations intern and did everything from posting calendar events online to writing press releases to meeting with media representatives. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and always excited to help me grow and learn about both the museum's mission and the tricks of the trade. Because of the intimite size of the department, I was on the front lines of many of their projects and got hands-on experience promoting an organization that I can to truly love and believe in. For me, this internship allowed me to give a real application to my academic interest in history and helped me develop many important skills that will stay with me throughout my life."

"I have to say that my internship at Plimoth Plantation was not only a fantastic learning experience, but it was a lot of fun. Everyone was helpful and friendly - always asking about me and willing to help me if I had a problem. Everything was the best - everything worked! I enjoyed working with Janet, Patty, Paula and Jenn -- I learned so much about the business through them. It was definitely better than I expected -- I had heard those usual intern stories of coffee-and-copying all day. But at Plimoth Plantation, I actually had some degree of responsibility and I felt I was contributing to the operation.

I thought Orientation Day was very helpful. It was a chance to meet the other interns and become familiar with the museum's inner-workings. Prior to that, my only experience was going through the museum as a middle school student. Let's just say this time was a whole lot different! I really enjoyed my internship at Plimoth. I have fond memories of the marketing and public relations departments. I not only learned a lot about the business side of a museum, but also a lot of history I never got in school. In fact, I had to read William Bradford's "Of Plymouth Plantation" for one of my classes this semester and quite impressed my professor with everything I had learned. Thanks!"
