"Plimoth" is one of several spellings used by the colony's governer, William Bradford. There were no rules for spelling in the early 17th century, and each writer spelled phonetically, sometimes spelling a single word several different ways.
When Plimoth Plantation was founded, it was decided to use Governer Bradford's most common spelling -- "Plimoth" in order to differentiate the museum from the modern town of Plymouth.
