Sarah Carey Jenney was a wife, landowner, and business owner, who played an important role in Plymouth’s community during the mid 1600s.
As the owner and operator of a grist mill, Sarah occupied a role rarely associated with women of the 17th century, challenging traditional expectations about women’s work, property ownership, and economic independence.

Speaker Bio:
Lauren McDonough is a public historian and educator who currently serves as Site Supervisor of the Grist Mill at Plimoth Patuxet Museums. She has been part of the Museums’ team since 2019, previously working as a Public History Educator and bringing extensive experience in historical interpretation and education.
Lauren holds a Master of Arts in History and a Bachelor of Education in Secondary Education and Teaching from Rhode Island College, where she graduated magna cum laude and served as President of the Educators of Social Studies. Her work at the Grist Mill offers a unique perspective on Plymouth’s agricultural, industrial, and community history.
