Blooming with Excitement: Plimoth Patuxet Museums’ Spring Heirloom Plant Sale

Over 100 types of heirloom species will be available

Plymouth, Massachusetts (April 30, 2025) – Plimoth Patuxet Museums will host its annual Spring Heirloom Plant Sale on two consecutive weekends: the first being Saturday, May 17th, and Sunday, May 18th; the second will be Saturday, May 24th, and Sunday, May 25th, from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. each day. An annual favorite among the regional gardening community, Plimoth Patuxet’s Spring Heirloom Plant Sale boasts a bountiful selection of more than 100 types of species, including the Museum’s favorite heirloom herbs, vegetables, and flowers that are grown on the Historic Patuxet Homesite and in the 17th-Century English Village.

The annual Spring Heirloom Plant Sale is made possible thanks to the dedication of Plimoth Patuxet’s horticulture volunteers who work alongside Dr. Fred Dunford, the Museum’s Horticulture Lead. During this past winter, they propagated thousands of plants for the sale and for the Museum’s own gardens, sowing the seeds of history. “Our team of volunteers are a phenomenal group who are deeply invested in this Museum and its educational mission,” said Dr. Fred Dunford. “The seedlings that they have worked so hard to propagate provide a sense of history that is handed down through generations. Our hope is that history will continue with each gardener who joins us at this unique plant sale.”

“The Spring Heirloom Plant Sale is fantastic in so many ways⸺not only does it act as a fundraiser, but it also underscores the vitality of the Museum’s educational mission,” notes Christina Basler, Director of Education and Group Programs. “Each plant that gardeners will find at the sale has a story that ties it to the history and culture of the Wampanoag People and English colonists who met along these shores of change in the 17th century.” Knowledgeable horticulture staff will be on hand during the two weekends to help distill these stories and provide expert gardening tips.

Proceeds from the sale support Plimoth Patuxet’s educational mission and annual operations. “The Spring Heirloom Plant Sale is a great opportunity for our South Shore and South Coast neighbors to invest in the Museums’ mission while also getting their gardens started for the 2025 growing season,” said Tom Begley, Executive Director. “Each spring the proceeds go towards our operations, ensuring there will also be a future for the past at Plimoth Patuxet Museums.”

Admission to the plant sale is free and proceeds will support the mission of Plimoth Patuxet Museums. Plimoth Patuxet Museums is open for the 2025 season now through the Sunday following Thanksgiving Day. To learn more about program offerings and events, please visit www.plimoth.org.
