Plimoth Patuxet Museums is a living history museum of the 17th-century that provides engaging and experiential outdoor and indoor learning environments on its main campus, and at Mayflower II on Plymouth’s waterfront, and at the Plimoth Grist Mill. Our permanent exhibits tell the complex and interwoven stories of two distinct cultures - English and Wampanoag.

Position Summary

The Exhibit Carpenter is a hands-on position that is part of the Facilities Team responsible for the maintenance, repair, and in some cases, new construction of the reproduction structures, exhibits and built landscapes throughout the Museum. The Facilities team ensures that all carpentry projects reflect the appropriate historical time period with use of tools, equipment and techniques reflective of the identified era, including modern buildings. Under the direction of the Director of Facilities, this position is tasked with ongoing routine maintenance of buildings and meeting the goals of a prioritized work plan.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain, repair and be involved with the construction of various historical and modern houses, outbuildings, animal enclosures, fences, and other structures and reproduction artifacts such as benches and garden beds.

  • Structural maintenance – make required repairs to building and other structures based on prioritized work plan.

  • Work with contracted professionals in the new construction and/or repair of large reproduction structures, including house, palisade, and fort. May serve as project manager for certain projects or act as a liaison to contracted professionals onsite as assigned by supervisor.

  • Interact with Museum guests while performing carpentry work.

  • Collaborate with other departments on special projects, exhibits, grant proposals, public relations, and special events; provide carpentry skills for various project managers as needed.

  • Consult with experts on various projects as requested by supervisor.

  • Attend training sessions and meetings as required by supervisor.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma / GED

  • Must be skilled in basic general carpentry and willing to learn about historical tools and techniques.

  • Ability to work safely and follow Museum safety policies and procedures, including the proper usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Must be able to work in all types of weather.

  • Must have valid driver’s license.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands outlined here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform successfully the essential functions of the job. Duties may include:

  • High degree of physical strength, stamina, and dexterity of hands and fingers to operate equipment, tools or motor vehicle

  • Ability to use hand and power tools in a safe and appropriate manner: axes, saws, chisels, and other hand tools to split, rive, hew, pitsaw, perform simple joinery, maintain and sharpen tools, and accomplish other woodworking projects using hand tools as well as power tools (including chain saws, wood splitters, power drills, etc.).

  • Work may also include operating trucks and tractors. Must be licensed to operate motor vehicles, and preferably able to operate a manual transmission.

  • Must be able to climb on house frames or other high places and work in awkward positions and unstable locations in a variety of outdoor settings.

  • Stand for extended periods of time. Walking, lifting, kneeling, bending, crouching and seeing in varying light conditions. Walking over rough or uneven surfaces. Work sitting, standing, kneeling, or bent over, sometimes for extended periods of time, climb stairs and ladders.

  • Should be capable of lifting and moving objects sometimes in excess of 50 pounds.

  • Work will occur outdoors most of the time in a variety of weather conditions (including severe storms), in dusty and smoky environments, in poorly lit areas, near open fires, and in cramped and crowded places. Work occurring in other offsite outdoor locations is likewise not climate controlled, and may include prolonged exposure to direct sun, in swamps, in forests, and may include exposure to biting insects.

  • The noise level varies from quiet to loud.

Additional Requirements

The Museum is open 7 days a week April through the end of November. You must be available to work Saturdays, Sundays and some holidays, including Thanksgiving Day. Typical hours during the Museum’s Open Season (March-November) are 9:00am - 5:00pm, five days a week through the end of November, and 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday – Friday from December through March. Flexibility in work hours and days off is required. Depending on the season, this position may include working additional night/weekend hours or days as needed.
