Plimoth Patuxet Museums is a living history museum of the 17th-century that provides engaging and experiential outdoor and indoor learning environments on its main campus, and at Mayflower II on Plymouth’s waterfront, and at the Plimoth Grist Mill. Our permanent exhibits tell the complex and interwoven stories of two distinct cultures - English and Wampanoag.

Operating on a remarkable property overlooking Cape Cod Bay, Plimoth Patuxet brings the story of the United States’ early foundation to life for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year since its founding in 1947. The main exhibits are enhanced with an exciting array of special events, public programs and workshops that offer a rich and diverse exploration of the 17th-century.

Position Summary

The Grounds Worker is responsible for the maintenance appearance of our outdoor spaces. The Grounds Worker will have a passion for landscaping and grounds maintenance, ensuring that our facilities are clean, safe, and visually appealing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain landscaping equipment and tools, ensuring they are in safe and working condition.

  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools, and construction equipment and vehicles.

  • Assist with planting, pruning, mowing, and maintaining flower beds, lawns, shrubs, and trees.

  • Perform routine maintenance on grounds equipment, such as lawn mowers, trimmers, and blowers.

  • Remove debris, litter, and leaves from sidewalks, parking lots, and other outdoor areas to ensure a tidy environment.

  • Assist in the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems, ensuring proper watering of plants and grass.

  • Follow all safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a safe working environment for yourself and others.

  • Participate in snow removal, leaf collection, and other seasonal activities as needed.

  • Report any damage, hazards, or maintenance needs to the supervisor promptly.

  • Ability to learn CPR and First aid

  • Provide a friendly and welcoming presence for all guests and coworkers throughout the Museum.

  • Will support the Museum's mission, vision, core values and customer service philosophy.

  • Ability to: Use cleaning materials, equipment and methods according to predetermined standards.

  • Maintain tools and equipment assigned, in a clean working order and proper storage.

  • Plan, organize and prioritize work; meet schedules and time lines.

  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

  • Valid Driver’s License.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Sufficient training and 3 years of Maintenance experience to demonstrate the knowledge and skills.

  • Valid Driver’s License.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Duties may include:

  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to sit or stand, crouch or kneel and operate cleaning equipment.

  • Ability to work with changing indoor and outdoor environments.

  • Lifting, carrying and placement of various types of furniture used by the Museum.

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • Be able to transport carts with bulk furniture up to 100+ lbs.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • The workplace is not climate controlled.

  • This position requires indoor and outdoor work in a variety of conditions.

  • Work may be performed in dusty and smoky environments; in poorly lit areas; near open fires.

  • The noise level in the workplace varies from quiet to loud.

Additional Requirements

The Museum is open 7 days a week April through the end of November. You must be available to work Saturdays, Sundays and some holidays, including Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving Day is an “All-Hands On” day. Typical hours are 8:00am - 4:00pm, five days a week through the end of November. Flexibility in work hours and days off is required. Depending on the season, this position may include working additional night/weekend hours or days as needed. Schedules may change based on weather forecast, and/or low attendance for any given day.
