Community Comes Together for Museum Clean Up Day at Plimoth Patuxet
Museum Clean Up Day has become a cherished tradition at Plimoth Patuxet. Each year, it offers the public a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into what it takes to maintain a large living history museum during the off-season. After months of New England winter weather, extensive preparation is required to ready the buildings, landscapes, and pathways that form the immersive historical environment visitors experience.
Preparing for the 2026 Season
Participants this year included individuals, families, and organized groups, all united by a shared commitment to preserving one of the nation’s most significant living history sites. The work completed during the day will be experienced by thousands of visitors who travel to Plymouth to learn about the intertwined histories of Indigenous and English communities in the 17th century.
Volunteers tackled a wide range of projects across the Museum’s campus. Tasks included shoveling snow, cleaning indoor exhibit spaces, seeding heirloom plants, and clearing pathways of winter debris. The effort helped ensure that key areas—from the Historic Patuxet Homesite to the 17th-Century English Village—will be ready for guests exploring the Museum this spring.
The cleanup effort came exactly one week before the Museum’s official 2026 season opening on March 14. As Plimoth Patuxet prepares for a landmark year with national attention surrounding the 250th anniversary of the United States, volunteers play a vital role in making the Museum experience possible.
A Day Well Spent
Following a productive morning of work across the grounds, volunteers were invited to take a well-deserved break and enjoy lunch provided by Plimoth Patuxet Museums as an expression of gratitude for their time and dedication.
The meal was catered by the Museum’s new food service partner, Gourmet Caterers, offering participants an opportunity to relax, connect with fellow volunteers, and refuel after their hard work. Sharing lunch together provided a welcoming moment of community and gratitude, highlighting the Museum’s appreciation for the individuals who generously contributed their time to help prepare the campus for the upcoming season.
"Lunch was delicious. It was all inclusive, there were a lot of good options" - Carl, Volunteer Boy Scout
By the end of the day, volunteers had made a visible difference across the campus. Freshly cleaned pathways, tidied gardens, and refreshed spaces now stand ready to greet the public.
Beyond the practical work accomplished, the event also reinforced the strong connection between the Museum and the broader community. With the 2026 season just days away, Museum Clean Up Day served as both a preparation effort and a celebration of the people who help keep history alive.
