Revolutionary Ideas
Started Here

The conversations that took place here, in Plymouth, Massachusetts, carved a path to 1776 with the founding idea of a civil body politic. You can’t understand what happened 250 years ago without understanding what happened first.

A New Form of Governance

Here, early encounters between cultures shaped ideas about governance and community that still echo throughout American. These moments were not static or simple—they were lived experiences that influenced a new and changing world. They laid the groundwork for the political and civic ideas that would evolve in the centuries that followed.

The Mayflower Compact was signed on November 11, 1620.

This historic moment was the birthplace of self-government in the British Atlantic World and played a critical role in the United States' constitutional tradition. The Mayflower Compact was the beginning of a groundbreaking seventy-year experiment in civil government and the search for individual spiritual liberties that forged a road to America's Revolution a century later.

And this story is not just about the Pilgrims.

The Wampanoag and other Indigenous people have lived on this land from time immemorial. When remembering the events of 1620 and 1776, it is important to acknowledge that they were here before. They were here then. They are here now, and they will continue here after.
