Plimoth Patuxet recently welcomed museum guests of all ages to enjoy an expanded roster of daily offerings as it hosted Spinning & Weaving Week during the second week of October. Dedicated volunteers and staff engaged museum visitors through textile art demonstrations underscoring the way in which Indigenous and European people who lived along these historic shores of change during the 17th century created textiles with various materials.

The Museum is ever grateful to the many hands that made enhanced programming possible this week. Native Knowledge Keepers and Artisans who work as Educators on the Historic Patuxet Homesite spoke with guests about Indigenous weaving material and practices while underscoring that their cultural traditions and heritage continue to be important practices of their modern community.

In the Craft Center, volunteers demonstrated multiple stages of wool processing with a romney fleece that was generously donated by R.H. Lindsay. Hands-on learning experiences provided children with an opportunity to engage directly with spinning and weaving. As spinning, weaving, and clothing making did not occur in Plymouth Colony during the time period interpreted on site, guests were able to explore period clothing and care in the 17th-Century English Village. Together, these educational activities helped Museum guests to understand the labor and value associated with clothing production in the 17th century.

With a stitch of gratitude, Plimoth Patuxet gratefully acknowledges the dedicated volunteers whose support of Spinning & Weaving Week was invaluable
