Twelve years after his last feature film, Salles returns with a harrowing, powerfully executed historical drama about Brazil’s military dictatorship in the early 1970s. The story, told through the eyes of Eunice Paiva (Fernanda Torres), the wife of a civil engineer and politician Rubens Paiva (Selton Mello) who was disappeared by the regime, was based on the book of the same name by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, Rubens’ son. This is also a personal film for Salles, who knew and spent time with the Paiva family before the tragedy. Brazil’s submission for the 2025 Oscars. The film is a testament to resilience against injustice.
